A rock formation that is spherical in shape, hollow, and contains some amount of minerals in it. Bathymetry from hydrographic charts and more detailed bathymetric data collected specifically for the analysis are converted to a dense array of water depth values and input to the computer program as a grid of discrete depth values. This approach helps students tie together geologic facts that might otherwise seem disconnected. Many of the ideas expressed by these men were not to resurface until the Renaissance.
