The genetic components of behavior evolve through natural selection favoring traits that enhance survival and reproductive success in a population. Trees are my temples and forests are my cathedrals. The cosmos of the Renaissance world was a living organism. Dominion over the land means that a responsible Christian will care for the land with vision, mercy, benevolence, and compassion. To simulate the spectral response of the eye of C. ventriosum we devised a “shark-eye” camera that comprises a Red Epic camera, a pack consisting of a Wratten 44 A gelatin filter (Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY), a 575 nm shortpass filter, and a 400 nm longpass filter (Edmund Optics, Inc., Barrington, NJ) placed over the Nikon NF-S Nikkor 24 mm 1:1.4G ED lens ( Fig. 8 ).

This amazing display of these unusual woodland plants is one of the reasons we visited this site. In his later work, Adorno advocates a re-enchanting aesthetic attitude of “sensuous immediacy” towards nature. This seemingly has to do with the classification of living organisms which is specific to culture. The importance of research in these areas as a foundation for substantive theological reflection should not be underestimated.

The non-living elements include: energy, water, air, substrate, and chemical constituents such as nutrients. Monsoon: a reversing seasonal wind often bearing heavy rainfall. Biofluorescent footage of the wobbegong or carpet sharks (Orectolobidae) has also been documented by Richard Fitzpatrick of Biopixel (unpublished). Six stands, three of gorse, three of kanuka, were sampled using transects totalling five samples per stand.

All the sciency parts of our field work were exciting and gratifying, but there are other reasons why the Yukon is special*: it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. Louv (2005) quotes biologist Elaine Brooks who said that humans seldom value what they cannot name; Brooks goes on to paraphrase one of her students who said “giving a name to something is a way of knowing it” (Louv, p. 41). After hundreds of years, deforestation and grazing by goats destroyed most of the vegetation that covered the mountain soil and protected it from erosion.
