Mark Lewis makes an utterly insipid subject utterly fascinating. When local people control their own resources, no tree can be destroyed unless local people allow it to happen. Exploitation of an environment by means of certain cultural devices may also drastically affect the environment, which again reacts upon the culture. Awareness of humankind’s effect on its environment has been traced to Gilbert White in 18th-century Selborne. Lakes and ponds are large, natural bodies of standing water. The community, then, tends to approximate a self-maintaining, or “closed,” system. Scholastics already made the difference between first and second nature; by second nature the one built by humans was meant. Sandy returns to her experiment, but this time she has a separate group of plants under the same conditions as the rapping plants, but with soothing Led Zeppelin songs playing. As I stated in my Trailside School catalog, learning how to create a sensible community for ourselves was a major goal of my expedition education program and this process included most disciplines and senses including music, art, writing, science and relationship building.

In virgin grassland interspaces, the herbaceous vegetation resembles mixed prairie or tallgrass prairie, whereas little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium [Michx.] Nash) usually dominates the sparse herbaceous understory of the closed-canopied areas.
