If that is how the rich of the world make their great escape, it has dire economic, social, moral, and political implications, even for citizens of wealthy countries, as Dr. Unless the government interferes, excessive profits (those above a normal rate of return) will ultimately be competed away as others enter the field to grab some of the high return. One practical argument in favour of reduction is the idea that economic inequality reduces social cohesion and increases social unrest, thereby weakening the society.

We didn’t have the 1 percent, but we had the 5 percent. It is important to have this life cycle as the peak at mid-life motivates workers to get to this stage and realise their income potential. The latest statistics show that Hong Kong’s Gini coefficient — a measure of wealth distribution where 0 describes perfect equality and 1 describes perfect inequality — has reached 0.533, the widest income gap among all developed economies. I am also grateful for the insightful comments from the three reviewers.

In practice, income is usually spread out a bit more, but the meaning of the number is always the same: The closer you get to 1, the more unequal the distribution of income. But in America today, the top 5% of earners pay 59% of all personal federal income taxes. As a growing share of income is flowing into the hands of a few, consumption is falling whilst saving is rising. In Richmond, California, city officials seized by eminent domain homes that were under water, but that would be difficult in New York, where real estate is a major economic driver and demand still outpaces supply.

According to the study, a majority of respondents to a survey in 2012 ranked inequality above corruption and unemployment as China’s top problems. The major source of uncertainty about the future concerns productivity growth rather than demographics. Reducing the power of the elites calls for better oversight of financial markets (by breaking the bubble/bust syndrome, this would also help the labor market stay at full employment when we get there), less money in politics, and less privileging of unearned incomes in the tax code.

The bottom 20 percent has typically accumulated no savings. Furthermore, the survey cites a study showing "ample evidence that firms work to disguise the magnitude of CEO pay," such as lifetime healthcare, below-market-rate loans, and above-market-rate loans when CEOs defer their compensation, to lessen shareholder outrage. That is not what you would conclude from stories in the press. Since 2009, corporate profits, dividend payouts, and the stock market have all risen sharply, but wages have barely budged.
