In 1707 at age 22, he began studying opera in Italy, where there was a great appreciation for the art form and dozens of opera companies.

As one can imagine, he already applied the Viennese four-movement style in them and Grove points out that in these works, the combination of Italian and German style elements was increased. This final category uses not only the techniques but actual instruments of Haydn's time (or modern replicas). Brahms was one of the finest craftsmen in music history, refusing to write retrogressions, and adhering very strictly to form. And finally the exultant chorus ‘The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God' forms the conclusion to this great oratorio.

His time in London was the most successful time and the high point of his career. It’s a simple, logical melody but, with the right performer, it’s easily the highlight of the whole symphony. Il enviait l’apparente liberté dont jouissait à Vienne son jeune ami Mozart, mais s’était résigné à rester au palais d’Eszterháza. Three famous composers were born this week: Heinrich Schütz, probably the most important German composer of the “pre-Bach” era, on October 8th of 1585; Giuseppe Verdi, the greatest Italian opera composer of the 19th century, on October 9th of 1813, and Camille Saint-Saëns, a very popular Frenchman, also born on October 9th, but of 1835.

Haydn, qui continuait à bénéficier de son poste de maître de chapelle, prolongea son séjour d'un an en Angleterre, acte d'une indépendance nouvellement acquise. These include the “Hornsignal” (number 31) and “The Hunt” (number 73) that feature thrilling writing for horns, here played on raspy and characterful natural horns for which Haydn actually wrote (the modern horn is mellow and boring by comparison). There is a soprano called Hanne, a tenor called Lucas and a bass called Simon.

Some characteristic examples of Haydn's "rollicking" finale type are found in the "London" symphony No. 104, the string quartet Op. 50 No. 1, and the piano trio Hob XV: 27. Though he seriously considered living permanently in England and changing his citizenship, he finally decided to return to Vienna, the country of his birth. Known as the "Salomon" or "London" symphonies, they include several of his most popular works: "Surprise" (#94), "Military" (#100), "Clock" (#101), "Drum Roll" (#103), and "London" (#104).

Geiringer notes that his first contract makes Haydn seem like a lowly servant – among other prescribed duties, he was to present himself twice daily to the Prince, who would then order the music he desired, to be performed in uniform "in white stockings, white linen, powdered and with either a queue or tie-wig."
