As a result of this depth and its potential for tension, Politics can be a very powerful device or theme in literature. For Fear of the Night (1987), for example, was an extremely effective traditional ghost story, and Dialing the Wind (1989), an Oxrun Station novel, does an excellent job of describing the mystery of how some unusual music controls the secret of several lives. His last major work was the six-part novel known as the Blackwater Saga, consisting of The Flood, The Levee, The House, The War, The Fortune, and Rain, all published in 1983.

All along, nefarious wizard Saruman awaits the Fellowship members at the Orthanc Tower in Isengard. Now fantasy fiction was beginning to develop its own corps of writers, and one of the most interesting of these was Jennifer Roberson, whose debut novel, Shapechangers! (1984), was the first in what would be the eight-volume Chronicles of the Cheysuli. Winter Wake (1989) is another excellent ghost story. We see just how he got his name ‘Oakenshield’, and how he grew into the warrior we see him as today.
