Based on its 2010 estimates, the country had a population of 35 million, however 23 percent of the population lives below poverty line. International aviation rules require polar gear that takes up several rows of seats to fly over Antarctica (specifically, south of 72 degrees), so there are no commercial routes over the continent. It involved British and other European countries' manufactured goods which were shipped to Africa, then slaves from there to the West Indies and then sugar and other products back to Europe. Free medical care, which was introduced by the Algerian government in 1974 under the Social Security system, helps pay for those who are ill.
